COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Obediah Sheldon’s pristine marble headstone was installed at historic Mount Hope Cemetery, marking the local veteran’s service in the War of 1812. His descendant, Leslie Murray, discovered his unmarked grave and arranged the new military marker on Oct. 7 — a step that now helps the community remember his story.  Lansing City Pulse

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today at the LookOut Gallery at MSU’s Residential College of Arts and Humanities, an exhibit titled 'Bridging walls + different worlds' shows art and poetry by incarcerated Michigan residents. Curated by faculty and students, the display uses installations and a life-size cell replica to share themes of freedom and the challenges of reentry.  Lansing City Pulse
  • The Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series started its 2025-26 season at Fairchild Theatre on November 3 with a sold-out show of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons led by Dmitri Berlinsky and MSU string players. The event also featured Astor Piazzolla’s version played by piano professor Derek Polischuk—he said it mixes old style with tango—to give the audience a fresh view of a classic work.  The State News
  • Peppermint Creek Theatre Co. is staging the debut play The Best We Could—a family tragedy—by Emily Feldman through Sunday.   • On November 7, the Wharton Center hosted a lively performance of Michigan State University Professor Zhou Tian’s new piece “A Thousand Years of Good Prayers” that mixed loud percussion with soft melodies—capturing the audience’s attention.   • Riverwalk Theatre presented 'Little Women,' a modern retelling of the classic novel that blends feminist ideas with a coming-of-age story—reviewers noted inventive set designs and strong performances that balanced technical missteps like an overly loud ticking clock audio.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Family members of former artist Eugene Curtis Stephenson disputed details in an Oct. 29 story on the 34-foot mural at the Ingham County Parole Office, saying he played a larger role than reported by Martín Vargas. Vargas noted he worked 65 days on the mural while Stephenson contributed about 10 days before his death on Oct. 9.  Lansing City Pulse
  • MSU’s Department of Theatre is performing 'Othello' as part of its Secrets & Spotlights season—Andrew Keller stars as Iago who uses lies to make Othello doubt his wife and friends. ECONOMY NEWS

  • LEAP will celebrate 20 years in 2026 after boosting our region's economic growth with 10,941 jobs created, $7.3 billion in investments, and 398 new companies across the area. The partnership has already spurred major projects like LG Energy and CreativeTech — efforts that promise to strengthen business and community prospects in our counties.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tara Becker-Utess from Mason was named Michigan’s top high school assistant principal for 2026 after a surprise celebration at a staff meeting on October 29th—she will now serve as the state’s representative at the National Education Leadership Awards in Washington, D.C. A reception honoring her will be held today at Mason City Hall at 6:30 p.m.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing School District Superintendent Ben Shuldiner was named the sole finalist for a Seattle Public Schools job and is negotiating his contract to leave by end January or early February—he remains active in Lansing as officials plan for an interim leadership search. The Seattle board voted unanimously on Nov. 5 and the district canceled its Nov. 20 meeting to start his self-evaluation process.  Lansing City Pulse

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At an Election Day party at The Fledge, progressive candidates gathered and played games while supporters waited for absentee vote returns. The results showed that well-funded, establishment-backed candidates won the races—with Julie Vandenboom finishing third—leaving voters to expect more of the same for Lansing.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Judge Rosemarie Aquilina extended her September order on November 12, giving Lansing 90 days to find temporary shelter for homeless residents living in a makeshift encampment near Dietrich Park—she also required the city to maintain portable restrooms and potable water. The decision came after the original 60-day deadline was set to expire this Friday.  WKAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State men's basketball will play San Jose State tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Breslin Center. The Spartans, ranked 17th after a 69-66 win over Arkansas, are expected to lean on strong defense and off-the-board play as they face a small-ball San Jose State team led by coach Tim Miles — experts expect MSU to control the rebounds.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State point guard Jeremy Fears Jr.—who missed his shots but made key assists in a 69-66 win over Arkansas—helped his team win and was praised by John Calipari and coach Tom Izzo; he will lead his team in preparing for a match against Kentucky at Madison Square Garden next Tuesday.  Lansing State Journal
