COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Lansing will close some streets on Friday night in advance of Silver Bells in the City, a downtown celebration from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.—the Electric Light Parade starts at 6:00 p.m. and the state Christmas tree will be lit at 7:30 p.m.  Stacks 92.1
  • Volunteers at the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum have restored a 1928 REO Speedwagon for the upcoming Silver Bells parade—this historic truck is adorned with thousands of lights and a Merry Christmas sign and will need a skilled driver to manage its rare double-clutch system.  FOX 47

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Frosty Korner, a longtime South Lansing ice cream shop, was destroyed by a gas leak fire that began just before 11 p.m. on November 17th at the corner of South MLK Blvd and West Barnes Ave — firefighters used an excavator to access the leak and no one was hurt since the shop was closed for the season.  WJIM AM

  • On an early November evening at Sleepy Hollow State Park, local photographer Barb Barton assembled her camera rig and captured striking images of comet Lemmon, Capella, and the Flying Dragon nebula — marking a two-year quest to document deep-sky wonders.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Happendance will launch its 50th season with the world-premiere show 'Threading Moonbows' this weekend — a fresh performance mixing dance, music by Aurora & Antheia and poetry by local artist Lisa Sarno.   • Ricky Ian Gordon, a celebrated opera composer, is in town for 10 days to mentor MSU Opera Theatre students as they prepare a condensed version of The Grapes of Wrath that will be staged this weekend.   • Michigan retirees will get a 2.8% Social Security cost-of-living increase that adds about $56 a month starting in January, but rising Medicare Part B premiums will likely reduce or cancel out much of the benefit—especially for those with lower monthly amounts.  Lansing State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study finds that cannabis workers in Michigan and four states may develop work-related asthma from plant dust and disinfectants—30 cases have been reported, including five in Michigan and two deaths from breathing problems. Researchers say companies must improve ventilation and doctors should write work restrictions so affected workers can get help through workers’ compensation.  Lansing City Pulse

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Devil’s Day Tattoo co-owners plan to redevelop adjacent historic units, including a community center and affordable housing, after the City Council set a December 8 public hearing for an OPRA tax abatement review. The project will use the abatement to save up to $500,000 and expand the shop from six to 13 tattoo artists — preserving original features and creating a local space for community events.  Lansing City Pulse
