  • Michigan law does not set a minimum age for children to be home alone, but experts say parents must consider a child’s maturity—children 10 and under are typically not ready for unsupervised time. Parents are urged to establish clear rules and trial periods, checking in with trusted neighbors if needed, before leaving their kids alone.  Lansing State Journal
  • On November 25th, the Michigan Supreme Court hosted its 23rd annual Adoption Day event in Lansing. Two local families finalized their adoptions—an Eaton Rapids couple adopted two daughters while a Delta Township family finalized the adoption of a grandson.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Okemos Public Schools board has hired the Michigan Leadership Institute to lead the search for a new superintendent after John Hood announced his retirement earlier this month. • EdTech companies spent nearly $900,000 lobbying Michigan lawmakers in 2024 and spring to steer school funds to products like iWellness, a tool that asks students about their well-being without proven research. Lawmakers and school officials now question whether taxpayer money is used wisely — pushing for better checks on these programs.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing Community College and Cleary University signed an agreement that lets students transfer credits from LCC’s business programs to matching courses in Cleary’s Bachelor of Business Administration program — a move designed to ease the transition for future graduates. • A recent report shows Michigan reading scores remain low as only 38.9% of third graders reached proficiency on the MSTEP, with teacher shortages+chronic absenteeism and cell phone distractions affecting classroom learning. State funding for teacher training and curriculum changes is expected to help but will take time to impact schools.  WKAR
