COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Nokomis Cultural Heritage Center will host its 32nd Annual Holiday Art Market this weekend at the Nokomis Center on Marsh Road in Okemos—running Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—displaying Native American-themed art and jewelry made by local artists.  Stacks 92.1
  • Homeowners must clear sidewalks of snow and ice within 24 hours to lower fall risks. Experts advise removing as much snow as possible before using de-icing products — like rock salt or calcium chloride — to avoid excessive chemical use that harms the environment.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Tony Award-winning musical The Wiz — a reimagined Wizard of Oz with an all-black cast and a blend of soul, gospel, rock and funk — plays at Wharton Center from Dec. 9 to Dec. 14. Cal Mitchell said the rearranged score adds new depth while honoring its roots.  The State News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After Eaton Rapids teacher Makenna Morse died in a car crash last April, locals honored her legacy by donating over 2,000 books during a Small Business Saturday drive at six local bookstores—books that are destined for more than 200 Little Free Libraries across Michigan. The drive was organized by Makenna's Books, an initiative founded by her family to continue her love of reading.  FOX 47

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The East Lansing Department of Parks, Recreation and Arts is offering a special fitness pass deal from Dec. 1 to Dec. 23 at the Hannah Community Center at 819 Abbot Road + the Family Aquatic Center at 6400 Abbot Road. Buyers of 10-visit passes will also receive two single-day passes, with Hannah Center passes valid for one year and Aquatic Center passes valid during the 2026 season.  City of East Lansing

  • Gillespie Group broke ground yesterday on Brick Row redevelopment—six buildings on East Michigan Avenue in downtown Lansing are set for renovation after a wall-breaking event with founder Pat Gillespie and Mayor Andy Schor. Local officials and community leaders joined the event as the project moves forward.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State named Pat Fitzgerald as its new head football coach on Dec. 1 after firing Jonathan Smith last Sunday, and he will be introduced today. The College Football Hall of Famer and former Northwestern coach signed an expected five-year deal pending board approval on Dec. 12 — officials say his hiring begins a new era for Spartan football.  Lansing State Journal
  • No. 7 MSU men's basketball team has maintained a 7 to 0 record and will face Iowa at Breslin Center today at 7 p.m. Coach Tom Izzo said the team will rely on ball sharing and consistent play to build on wins over ranked teams like Kentucky, Arkansas, and North Carolina — marking them as one of only two teams with three ranked wins so far.  The State News
  • DeWitt High School’s Panthers won the state football championship with a 54-20 victory over Mount Pleasant on Sunday and fulfilled a goal they had chased since fourth grade. Thousands of neighbors drove to Detroit for the game and hundreds later joined a fireworks celebration in DeWitt.  FOX 47
  • The Red Cedar Rowdies are the official student section cheering for both MSU men’s and women’s soccer at DeMartin Stadium, showing deep pride as they chant and travel to away games—helping boost the team’s spirit. Their support builds a close bond with the teams that makes MSU soccer unique.  The State News
