COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dave and Anne Burwick host free winter coat donation tents at 906 Willow Highway in Grand Ledge, open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Dec. 21. They have already given out nearly 1,000 coats + rely on donations to keep neighbors warm.  FOX 47
  • The Mid-Michigan Autism Association has scheduled a Sensory Santa event on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Next Gen Therapy in Lansing to support families with sensory-friendly holiday activities (including quiet photo opportunities).  WKAR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kindred Table, a new restaurant, will open on Saturday, Dec. 13 inside Crowne Plaza Lansing at 925 S. Creyts Road. It replaces Bordeaux and will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with vegetarian, vegan+gluten-free options.  WJIM AM
  • Dungeons & Flagons opened its doors in downtown Lansing at the historic Atrium Building on Thursday, Dec. 4 at noon with a ribbon cutting, discounted gift certificates, a costume contest, free dice, and refreshments to welcome tabletop gaming fans.  Stacks 92.1

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local arts shows break from holiday themes as MSU will feature jazz vocalist Rene Marie in a performance on Dec. 7 at Fairchild Theatre and a Department of Theatre improv run from Dec. 4-7 at Studio 60. Lansing Community College students offer varied concerts and showcases, while folk artist Bill Bartilson will present his set at Robin Theatre on Dec. 7.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan students made gains in math, although reading scores remained low, according to an MSU report released Thursday, Dec. 4. The report also noted that schools may adjust curricula and support as they address variations in student performance.  Lansing State Journal
  • At a Lansing summit for the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, a new report from the Autism Alliance of Michigan shows that students with disabilities face a 25 percentage-point graduation gap, more absences, and call for $1.28 billion in extra funding to support local special education.  Bridge Michigan

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DNR data from Dec. 4 shows Michigan hunters harvested 129,506 deer during the regular firearm season that ended Nov. 30—a decrease of roughly 7,000 from 2024, with Sanilac, Saginaw, and Menominee counties reporting the highest numbers.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Regulators held a virtual meeting on Dec. 3 to hear comments on DTE Energy’s proposal to power a planned data center campus in Saline Township. Business groups, labor unions, and residents weighed job creation against potential risks to local energy costs — the commission will act Dec. 5.  Lansing State Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Six historic homes in Cherry Hill have been renovated into 20 modern, affordable apartments thanks to a ($1.38 million MSHDA grant), with six pet-friendly units now available and move-in planned by the end of January. The project, developed by PK Companies, serves workforce individuals earning between $42K and $85K.  Lansing State Journal

  • Ava Schafer, a defending state champion from St. Johns High School, is battling rib inflammation while preparing for the upcoming cross country finals in Lansing & the surrounding area. The junior is focused on using her family’s support to overcome her setback and return to top form.  WKAR
