COMMUNITY NEWS

  • State flags were flown at half-staff on Sunday, Dec. 7 to honor Francis Flaherty, a Michigan native who earned the Medal of Honor at Pearl Harbor and was laid to rest in Charlotte. His legacy reminds locals of his brave sacrifice nearly 84 years ago.  Lansing State Journal
  • This holiday season, families in Lansing can snap photos with Santa at retail spots including Bass Pro Shop, Cabela's, Macy's, Nordstrom, Petco, and PetSmart (availability may vary by store).  Lansing State Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said 18 Five Below stores repeatedly overcharged $5 items despite promises to fix errors. The chain must meet with state officials by Dec. 15 to address pricing violations & avoid further legal action.  WJIM AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michigan communities glow with festive holiday lights as displays run across the state, including Lansing's 33rd annual Wonderland of Lights at Potter Park Zoo — open Thursday to Sunday through Dec. 23. Visitors can enjoy music, illuminated paths and Santa appearances at this family event.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A study by Michigan State University’s EPIC found that Michigan K-8 students improved in math by spring while reading scores have remained stagnant since COVID disruptions. The report also noted that gaps for lower-scoring middle school readers have begun to narrow.  WKAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MSU tested flashing LED lights on curve signs along a 1.7-mile stretch on M-32 west of Gaylord during winter weather to prompt drivers to slow down. The study found drivers reduced speed by about 1.5 mph, part of a broader MDOT effort to improve road safety.  WKAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Michigan State women's basketball team lost to Wisconsin 78-64 on Sunday, Dec. 7 at the Kohl Center. The Badgers pulled away with a key 10-2 run in the fourth quarter after trailing the Spartans by three in the third.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State football announced it will keep defensive coordinator Joe Rossi and safeties coach James Adams on coach Pat Fitzgerald's staff after a season marked by early defensive struggles that improved later, including a turnaround during the Michigan game.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU men’s soccer has signed four new recruits for next season including midfielder Dominic Dono, goalkeeper Ezra Horlings, midfielder Drew Rensing + defender Bilal Obeid. The recruits will help the team fill gaps left by departing players and build on a tradition of family and local talent at MSU.  The State News
  • MSU men's hockey won a 3-1 contest in Ann Arbor against Michigan after trailing early, improving its series split. The Spartans hold a 12-4-0 record and will play Ferris State on Sunday, Dec. 28 at 7:00 p.m.  The State News
