  • In Old Town, the decaying former Preuss Market (308 Cesar E. Chavez Ave.) highlights a need for protection amid rapid development. Preservationist Dale Schrader plans to pursue a local historic district to safeguard the area’s heritage.  Lansing City Pulse

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Thrift Witch opened in an old bank building in Old Town on Nov. 14 and will host a grand opening on Saturday, Dec. 20. Owner Tiesha King said community help secured the space for her shop & partner Sean Peters plans to relocate his tattoo studio there.  Lansing City Pulse
  • A judge ruled on Dec. 8 that the state’s new 24% cannabis wholesale tax will take effect Jan. 1, affecting Lansing’s local businesses as they prepare for higher consumer prices and slimmer margins. CULTURE NEWS

  • Lansing artist Chelsea Roberts started the Collage Club in May; its weekly sessions have grown from ten to over 30 participants. The club is hosting its first art show today at Hooked, a bookstore & wine shop & coffee shop, featuring collage works by 20 local artists.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Mannheim Steamroller celebrates its 40th Christmas Tour at the Wharton Center in East Lansing on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m., featuring classic holiday hits, multimedia effects, and 15 musicians playing over 20 instruments (adding festive arrangements).  Stacks 92.1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU is ranked No. 9 among U.S. public schools for graduate employability in the Global Employability University Ranking 2026 from Times Higher Education. The ranking shows that 93% of its bachelor's grads get jobs (over 65% work in Michigan).  WJIM AM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan’s aging water infrastructure needs major upgrades as state officials roll out several initiatives. The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy noted $907.4 million in loans for stormwater utilities and more work on lead service lines to protect public health — as climate change increases severe weather events.  Lansing City Pulse

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing candidate Samuel (Elyon Badger) Smeltzer, a Michigan National Guard veteran, spoke at Fenner Nature Center on Dec. 3 about his plan for universal healthcare and urged locals to spread his message rather than donate money.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Lansing is enforcing a new ordinance today that requires property owners to clear sidewalks within 24 hours after snowfall — if not, the city may clear the snow at a charge of $150 or more.  Stacks 92.1
  • Judge Aquilina said Lansing & a private owner are 98% done finalizing a plan to provide housing for residents of a homeless camp in north Lansing. They expect to complete a final deal on Dec. 17; advocates worry a settlement may force residents to move before Christmas.  Lansing State Journal

  • Lansing residents can get free or low-cost flu shots at pharmacies, doctor's offices, or health departments as flu season peaks. Health officials say the vaccine lowers serious illness and hospital visits while subclade K flu cases are rising.  Lansing State Journal

  • The Michigan State University Board of Trustees will vote tomorrow on Pat Fitzgerald’s contract, offering salary incentives, bonuses and perks like a private plane, club memberships and vehicles.
