- ➤ City Rescue Mission opened its new shelter on West Kalamazoo Street to serve more people as temperatures drop. Neighbors are invited to a community open house (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) to tour the facility now offering open beds for day and overnight services. FOX 47
- ➤ On Tuesday, Dec. 9, UM Health-Sparrow Lansing hosted Santa who delivered hundreds of toys from The Bottomless Toy Chest to hospitalized children. Volunteers and staff decorated a kids activity room — creating holiday cheer that brightened the season in Lansing. Lansing State Journal

- ➤ Babe’s Corner is moving to a downtown location at the corner of Washington and Kalamazoo Avenues (part of the Strange Matter venue with Bangos), with new signage already up and no official move date yet announced. WJIM AM
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Michigan State University announced today a historic $401 million commitment from Greg and Dawn Williams to improve Spartan Athletics and support academic programs. The donation will fund athletics upgrades through FOR SPARTA and strengthen initiatives in music and entrepreneurship, marking the largest gift in the university’s history. The State News
- ➤ MSU’s Board of Trustees approved a deal with Spartan Ventures on Friday, Dec. 12 to create a for-profit media company to boost athletics revenue, though some trustees said they want to see full financial documents before moving ahead. The State News
- ➤ Michigan State University approved a new investment committee on Friday to review calls for divestment from fossil fuels, weapons, and ties to Israel. The panel expanded its membership to 13 by adding four student seats + it will offer nonbinding recommendations to the president as discussions continue. The State News

- ➤ Jones Lake Park offers winter views and activities near 701 W. Fredrick St. in Lansing as its spring-fed lake shows frozen fall leaves and snow drifts while visitors may fish, kayak and stroll through open fields. Lansing State Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Michigan's new limited-edition red, white, and blue license plate will be available for order starting Jan. 2, 2026 as the state celebrates its semiquincentennial—raising funds for road repairs with additional fees. Car buyers can order the plate through dealerships or at Secretary of State offices. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ City officials extended Code Blue today to keep warming centers and shelters open each night — the plan helps residents without stable housing or reliable heat stay safe during the bitter cold. WJIM AM

- ➤ During the Dec. 12 meeting in East Lansing, Michigan State's Board of Trustees approved a pay raise for men's basketball coach Tom Izzo (the winningest coach in Big Ten history) to support his continued leadership of the Spartans. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ The Michigan State University Board approved Pat Fitzgerald as the next head football coach on Dec. 12. His contract includes a $4 million base salary plus $1 million supplemental income and runs through January 2031. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ MSU’s Board of Trustees approved head coach Pat Fitzgerald’s five-year contract on Friday, and the deal awaits his signature before the full contract is released. The term sheet (detailing a base salary of $4 million per season, supplemental pay increases, and performance incentives) was made public. The State News
