COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dec. 12 saw residents at the homeless encampment near Dietrich Park support each other by preparing meals with melted snow + venison roast. Kelly Cole, a two-time cancer survivor, and Tony Edward, saving for affordable housing, shared their stories of hardship and hope, highlighting local resilience.  Lansing State Journal
  • Bernaldo Hernandez, 65, dressed as Santa on Dec. 16 outside Affordable Tire & Service Center on Larch Street to share holiday cheer with drivers; he has visited local businesses regularly to thank them for their support.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU faculty member Pete Johnston will return to Jeopardy today for the 2025 Second Chance Tournament after narrowly missing a win last summer; he will face two opponents at (7:30 p.m. on WILX-TV in Lansing).  Stacks 92.1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State’s Board of Trustees approved an Advisory Committee for Responsible Investing on Dec. 16 to review requests by students, staff and community members to adjust ethical investment practices on campus. The 13-member panel will study cases of divestment tied to issues like fossil fuels and foreign investments.  Lansing State Journal
  • Gov. Whitmer has named literacy as her top priority in her final year in office. She will detail proposals to improve funding for libraries, support for families, and educator training in her upcoming State of the State speech following remarks at the literacy summit on Dec. 15.  Lansing State Journal
  • A recent report by U.S. News and World Report placed four local elementary schools among Michigan’s best, with Okemos Public Montessori ranking 39th in the top 3% and Murphy, David Scott, and East Lansing’s Whitehills ranking 71st, 90th and 107th respectively.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan law requires drivers to clear snow and ice from vehicles, including roof buildup, to keep windows and lights clear — failure to remove it may result in citations and liability for any caused hazards.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State defeated Toledo 92-69 Tuesday night at Breslin Center. The Spartans built an early lead with strong play from Jaxon Kohler and Kur Teng and now look ahead to a Jan. 2 Big Ten matchup with Nebraska.  Lansing State Journal
  • Kristen Kelsay marked one year as MSU volleyball head coach after guiding the team through its best season in eight years, though they fell just short of the NCAA tournament. She will add veteran attackers, new recruits, and plan international visits to reconnect with players in Australia & New Zealand after Christmas.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State men's and women's basketball teams will appear in the fall 2026 NBA 2K edition after players had data captured on campus (Nov. 11 and 13) as a teamwide NIL deal ensures compensation.  WKAR
