BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Dick’s Sporting Goods Outlet on west Lansing will close on January 17 and hold a going out of business sale with all sales final. The store (opened in 2023) advises patrons to visit nearby branches for their sporting goods needs.  WJIM AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The board will fill a seat left by Dr. Deyanira Nevárez Martinez after her election to City Council; applications open Dec. 18, 6 p.m. to Jan. 5, 5 p.m., interviews are set for Jan. 8 (or Jan. 9 if needed) and the new member is sworn in on Jan. 22.  Stacks 92.1
  • The school board named Jessica Benavides, a Lansing schools veteran, as interim superintendent on Dec. 18 after beginning contract talks on Dec. 11; she will take over on Feb. 1 as Ben Shuldiner stays until Jan. 31 + he accepted a position in Seattle.  Lansing City Pulse

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State utility regulators approved DTE Energy’s contracts on Thursday for Michigan’s first hyperscale data center in Saline Township (575-acre Stargate facility) that will serve Oracle, OpenAI and Related Digital; conditions attached aim to protect ratepayers and secure a projected $300 million annual cost savings.  Bridge Michigan

HEALTH NEWS

  • Danone U.S. is recalling So Delicious Dairy Free Salted Caramel Cluster frozen dessert in 1-pint containers sold in Michigan due to possible hard objects from cashew inclusions; consumers should check the UPC (74473476138) and best-by date Aug. 8, 2027 and avoid eating the product.  WJIM AM

SPORTS NEWS

  • East Lansing boys basketball excelled on Dec. 18 when its Trojans beat Waverly 74-62 in a CAAC Blue game. Senior DeQuarius Stewart led with 18 points and 6 rebounds — prompting coach Ray Mitchell to expect him to step up as a key playmaker moving forward.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State's club dodgeball team is the nation's top-ranked squad, fueled by competitive practices at IM Circle in East Lansing. The team won national titles in 2023 and 2024 and now sports an 8-0 season start as it eyes another championship in Columbus next year.  WKAR
  • Leigha Roberson scored 16 points, her best for the season, as Portland won 62 to 28 against Ionia on Dec. 19, 2025, boosting the Raiders' confidence. The game showcased strong teamwork and marked a turning point in her performance — a sign of growing reliability on the court.  Lansing State Journal
  • Eastern announced on Friday, Dec. 19 that Hall of Fame coach Dan Boggan is returning to coach after he last served in 2017. Boggan replaces Jordan Morgan and will work to rebuild the football program after a 2-7 finish.  Lansing State Journal
  • Tom Izzo unveiled the 2027 Final Four logo Friday, Dec. 19 at Ford Field where he recalled his 2009 run and set high hopes for the event; Final Four games will be held on April 3 and 5 as the city gears up for a weeklong basketball celebration.  Lansing State Journal
