COMMUNITY NEWS

  • About 50 residents of the homeless camp near Dietrich Park moved on Monday, Dec. 22 to the Causeway Bay Lansing Hotel + Convention Center, where they have been granted a six-week stay by city officials.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lise Mitchell of Grand Ledge Area District Library said popular checkouts in 2025 include help books, film based titles, nonfiction guides to canning, gardening, and cooking + novels for families. Many locals have used book clubs to build community while discovering new ways to learn.  WKAR
  • Michigan designated the American mastodon as its official fossil when Senate Bill 397 passed in 2002 after a local geology professor proposed the move, and museums have since recovered Ice Age specimens with preserved hair.  Lansing State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Powerball jackpot is up to $1.6 billion tonight after no ticket matched all numbers on Saturday and two Michigan tickets matched five white balls for $1 million each. A cash option winner will take home ($735 million) if all numbers are matched.  Stacks 92.1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan school districts filed an emergency appeal on Friday after a judge upheld a rule that forces districts to waive attorney-client privileges for $321 million in safety and mental health funds—officials must decide by Dec. 30 whether to accept the condition or opt out to preserve legal rights.  Bridge Michigan
  • State lawmakers are debating a bill that would require schools to allow ABA therapists to work one-on-one with students who have autism — a change parents say could keep kids in class while getting needed support. The proposal is under review amid questions on aligning therapy with current school plans.  Bridge Michigan

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasters reported that a minor geomagnetic storm let the northern lights be seen in parts of 10 states on Dec.22 (including spots near Lansing) while solar winds will continue through Dec.24, so residents are advised to move away from city lights for a clearer view.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Before Christmas, the St. Johns Police Department is offering free home security checks for residents traveling, with neighbors helping monitor mail and cameras (a service designed to keep empty homes secure) while owners are away.  FOX 47
  • Social Security beneficiaries with birthdays between the 21st and 31st will receive their payment tomorrow, Dec. 24, and checks will increase by about $56 per month from a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment starting Dec. 31.  Lansing State Journal

  • Celebration Herbals Senna tea is being recalled for possible Salmonella contamination. Residents with boxes showing UPC 628240201829 (lot code 251004) should stop using it and return it for a refund.  WJIM AM

  • In 2025, over 35 new eateries opened in Lansing, including local favorites like REO Town Clubhouse for pizza, RJ’s Burgers & Ice Cream with its signature sauce, Angela’s Café, 7 Brew, Good Truckin’ and Crown Grill.   • Dunk'd, a Lansing cookie shop that opened in October 2024, posts weekly cookie flavors on Facebook to engage local fans. The Banana Cream Pie cookie, made with Nilla wafers and banana pudding, recently emerged as a standout treat (a hit for sweet lovers).  WJIM AM

  • Michigan State women's basketball won the Cherokee Invitational title with a 66-49 win over Ole Miss on Monday, Dec. 22 in Cherokee, NC. Grace VanSlooten led the Spartans with a double-double as the team earned its first top-25 win this season.  Lansing State Journal
