CULTURE NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer and Lt. Gov. Gilchrist declared January as Muslim American Heritage Month in a proclamation honoring the contributions of American Muslims. Michigan, home to a large and diverse community in Dearborn and Hamtramck, offers museum exhibits and mosque programs to celebrate this heritage.  Lansing State Journal
  • Officials expect to open a new building on the site of the Ovation concert venue in March while construction on the full facility begins later in 2026 — a project aimed at enhancing downtown arts and culture.  Lansing State Journal
  • The MSU Museum reopened on Wednesday, Jan. 14 with the 'Blurred Realities' exhibit on the Michigan State campus — a project that followed an 18-month, $28 million renovation of the historic space established in 1857.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CHAARG and UAB hosted 'Claw Clips and Soda Sips' on Wednesday (6 to 8 p.m.) in the Union Ballroom to introduce students to club activities and wellness with crafts and a soda bar; the event kickstarted CHAARG’s recruitment period for the new semester.  The State News

  • Michigan will face several days of frigid temperatures & lake-effect snow as a dip in the jet stream pulls cold air south. A polar vortex disruption is forecast for late January, which may bring more bitter cold to the Great Lakes region.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state House passed a bill banning cell phones in classrooms with a 99-to-10 vote on Wednesday (part of Governor Whitmer's 2025 address) and it now awaits Senate approval.  Stacks 92.1
  • Residents can track Michigan snowplows using MDOT’s digital map+city sites in Ann Arbor, Lansing and other areas as snowfall tapers off. Officials remind drivers to keep safe distances according to state law.  Lansing State Journal

  • Exchange student Africa Beltran from Spain helped lead Bath High School's girls basketball team to an 8-0 start as she averaged 14.5 points and 7 rebounds in wins over Lansing Christian and Saranac; coach Gabe Sowa praised her leadership.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing-based Spartan Speak podcast featured Graham Couch and Chris Solari as they discussed how MSU's men's basketball reached a 15-2 record and previewed the team's West Coast trip to face Washington and Oregon — the conversation also noted MSU football transfer updates.  Lansing State Journal
