COMMUNITY NEWS

  • McNamara Canoe Landing park in Mason offers a kayak and canoe dock, nature trails and a catch and release fishing pond at 6450 W. Columbia Road—Ingham County Parks charge a $3 fee for residents and a $5 fee for nonresidents.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lansing School District is using a new curriculum—hands-on learning approaches as students will return to classrooms on August 20 to recover from 16 to 18 months out of school buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Superintendent Ben Shuldiner said graduation and reading rates are up, showing progress in overcoming past learning disruptions.  FOX 47
  • LingLong Wei, a former MSU student, filed a $100 million lawsuit against the university, claiming that hazardous pesticide exposure during her horticulture research led to her thyroid cancer and that her requests for protective equipment and proper training were ignored. Her attorneys said the negligence caused significant physical, emotional and financial harm while the suit seeks compensation for past and future losses.  The State News
  • Lansing area school districts face uncertainty as state legislators delay the 2025–26 budget, leading some districts to cut programs like free meals, bus routes, and staff. Administrators say they will await a final budget decision by Oct 1—until then, students and families must adjust to these changes.  Lansing State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • During August’s Tree Check Month, the Michigan DNR asks locals to watch for the invasive Asian longhorned beetle on hard woods and maples and to report any sightings by noting the location, taking a picture, and preserving the insect—steps taken to help protect Michigan trees.  WJIM AM
  • Michigan DNR stocked nearly 19 million fish in state waterways this spring and summer to restore populations and boost a $3.9 billion fishing economy—additional species will be stocked this fall.  Bridge Michigan

  • The Michigan State University Board of Trustees approved plans to build a permanent memorial honoring victims, those injured, and all affected by the February 13, 2023 campus shooting—this new memorial will replace the current fountain in the old horticulture gardens.
